Basic Aluminum Chloride is an inorganic polymeric high-valent polyelectrolyte flocculant, which can be considered as an intermediate hydrolysis product between aluminum chloride and aluminum hydroxide. Its chemical formula has various representations, such as [Al2(OH)nCl6-n] or Al(OH)2Cl, Al(OH)Cl2, etc., depending on its preparation method and process conditions. Basic Aluminum Chloride is usually a black or white powdered substance with high solubility and chemical stability.

Physical and Chemical Properties:

  • Appearance: Black or white powder.

  • Solubility: Easily soluble in water, forming a colloidal solution.

  • Acidity and Alkalinity: Weakly acidic substance with a pH value typically ranging from 4.0 to 5.0. When dissolved in water, it releases hydroxide ions, causing the water to exhibit an alkaline reaction.

  • Density: The density varies depending on the preparation method and process conditions but is generally high.

  • Melting Point: The specific melting point varies depending on the chemical formula and purity but is usually high.

Application Fields:

  • Water Treatment: As a flocculant, it is used to purify domestic water, industrial water, mine water, oilfield reinjection water, etc., effectively removing suspended solids, organics, heavy metals, and other impurities from the water.

  • Papermaking: Used for sizing in papermaking to improve the quality and strength of paper.

  • Textile Printing and Dyeing: As an auxiliary agent in textile printing and dyeing, it enhances printing and dyeing effects and product quality.

  • Other Industries: It is also widely used in precision casting hardening agents, refractory binders, glycerol refining, sugar syrup refining, fabric crease resistance, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and other industries.

Usage Instructions:

  1. Depending on the condition of the raw water, a small-scale test can be conducted beforehand to determine the optimal dosage.

  2. When using, mix and dissolve Basic Aluminum Chloride solid with a certain proportion of clear water (e.g., 1:9 to 1:15). Note that solutions with aluminum oxide content below 1% are prone to hydrolysis, reducing their effectiveness; high concentrations are difficult to dose uniformly.

  3. Add the flocculant according to the optimal dosage determined by the small-scale test and adjust as needed during operation.

Precautions:

  • Basic Aluminum Chloride solutions should be prepared and used immediately and should not be stored for too long, usually not exceeding 24 hours.

  • It is strictly prohibited to mix, transport, or store it with toxic substances. When storing, attention should be paid to waterproofing, moisture prevention, and preventing package damage.

  • Water treatment chemicals from different manufacturers or brands cannot be mixed or stored with other chemicals.

  • During use, avoid prolonged and excessive mechanical stirring to prevent it from affecting its effectiveness.

  • When using solid Basic Aluminum Chloride, first dissolve it in water to a certain concentration, then dilute it to the desired concentration with additional water; during dissolution, add water first, gradually feed the material, and stir continuously.

  • Wear protective equipment during operation to avoid direct skin contact or inhalation of its dust.
